빛은 사물에 닿아 그림자를 만든다. 그러나 그림자의 가장자리는 하나의 선으로 떨어지지않는다. 빛이 완전히 닿는 영역과 완전히 차단된 어둠 사이에는, 빛이 부분적으로만 닿는 넓은 전이의 지대가 있다. 천문학은 이를 penumbra, 반(半)그림자라 부른다. 나의 인물 작업은 이 penumbra의 영역에 머문다. 피사체의 곡면을 따라 빛이 어둠으로 건너가는 그 자리를, 나는 경계가 아니라 영역으로 본다. 어디서 빛이 끝나고 어디서 어둠이 시작되는지 특정할 수 없는 곳. — 완전히 드러나지도, 완전히 사라지지도 않는 그 자리에 나는 인물을 둔다. Light meets an object and casts a shadow. Yet the edge of a shadow does not fall as a single line. Between the fully lit region and the fully blocked darkness lies a broad zone of transition where light reaches only in part. Astronomy calls this the penumbra: the half-shadow. My portrait work dwells in this penumbral region. The place where light crosses into darkness along the curves of a subject, I see not as a boundary but as a region. Where one cannot say where light ends and darkness begins — in that place, neither fully revealed nor fully gone, I set my subjects.
